Schema markup is not optional anymore
Google stopped showing the rewards. That is not the end of schema.
Google quietly stopped showing most of the visible rewards for structured data, and a lot of smart marketing people read that as the end of the story. FAQ rich results dropped in 2023, gone entirely by 2026. HowTo went the same way. The natural conclusion: schema was a fad, time to move on.
That conclusion is wrong in an expensive way. The visible reward disappeared at almost the exact moment the invisible job got more important. Schema went from a way to win a fancier snippet to the layer machines read to figure out what your site actually is.
A human reads "Dr. Sarah Chen is our lead cardiologist" and instantly knows: person, doctor, works here. Effortless. You never think about it.
A machine sees a string of text and guesses. Schema is a small block of JSON that says the quiet part out loud: this is a Person, title Cardiologist, affiliated with this Organization. You're not changing what humans see. You're handing the machine a clean answer instead of making it infer one.
The stars went away. The skeleton underneath them became load-bearing.
Then the machines that answer questions got built.
Between 2024 and 2025, the whole answer-engine layer got built: AI Overviews, Copilot, ChatGPT search, Perplexity. These systems don't just crawl words. They build a model of entities: who you are, what you sell, who works there.
By March 2025, both Google and Microsoft said out loud that they use schema to do exactly that. That is the two companies who own the pipes telling you which door they read first.
Where to start, in order.
Don't carpet-bomb every page with every type. Start with what describes who you are: a clean Organization block with the right name, logo, address, and social profiles. Then real Article markup with a named, credentialed author, so the machine knows who wrote it and why they'd know.
Then validate, because invalid schema is worse than none. A label maker printing the wrong label is still wrong.
No longer how you win a prettier result. Now how machines find you.
Structured data is how the machines that now answer questions about your industry find you, place you, and say your name correctly.
The gap closes the day everyone else figures it out. It's the same gap Beacon checks for on every site audit, before it becomes the industry standard and stops being an edge.
