We built the tool, and wrote the rules the team built against.

Genie makes the lifts and telehandlers that put people to work forty feet in the air. Behind every machine is a mountain of specifications, and specifications are only worth anything if everyone can trust the same version.

We built the document-management system those specs lived in, and, leading a small development team, set the coding standard the rest of the work was written against.

The hard part was the order it had to happen in.

The spec tool and the standard were not two jobs done back to back. The guidelines had to exist while the thing they governed was still being built, so a growing team shipped one consistent codebase instead of five personal ones.

What the standard bought them.

A team that could grow without fragmenting, and a system that kept telling the truth long after launch, because the tool made the right way the easy way.
